MTK Nándor Hidegkuti Stadium Budapest, District VIII 2014, design competition, honourable mention
This distinctive building, rooted in the traditions of MTK, contemporary and fully suited to its function, with a clean, fresh architecture, symbolises the progressive spirit and openness of a sports club with a long history, and strengthens the MTK identity. We make good use of the slopes and levels of the site with the planned building. The level of the existing pitch is one storey lower than the public space connection on the Hungária körút side, and this level difference reduces to half a storey on the Törökbecse utca side. We keep the new pitch at its original level and create the main entrance level and the athletes' level at this height, so only minimal earthworks are needed and there is no need to fill the currently sunken level. The main entrance level is revealed from Törökbecse utca through a gentle, cut-like opening, and the building blends into its surroundings in a land-art-like way, reinforced by the gently sloping, elongated, comfortable ramp that climbs up to the stands level. The architecture of the building is made distinctive by its arena character, its clarity, its light, “floating” roof and facade, and its mass composed with subtle movements. The lightly yet distinctively articulated floating facade surfaces come together in diagonal forms. Alongside giving dynamism, this refers to the characteristic diagonal stripe of the MTK crest and jerseys, one of the most defining visual elements of the club from its foundation to the present day. The diagonal stripes return in the colouring of the stand seating. In designing the building, we separate the entrances, circulation and functions for spectators, athletes, VIPs and media, which creates a clear, legible order with its many advantages. The functional layout is rational, and we have treated the areas used sensibly and economically. The home and away athletes' entrances and changing rooms are separate. We have designed the entrances and stand areas for home and away supporters to be clearly separated.
