The new building of the care home for the elderly, which is owned by the municipality and run by a church organisation, stands behind the existing building, to its south. In siting it we took account of the conditions of the plot and the surroundings. The design of the new wing affects the existing building only slightly in terms of alterations, and connects to it through a link section. The ground floor of the new building is on the same level as the ground floor of the existing building. The plot is relatively narrow and very steep, and the new building has a ground floor plus two upper floors. We exploited the advantages of the slope and designed the building so that every level has a direct connection to the terrain: the ground floor to the north and east, the first floor to the east, and the second floor to the south. We relocated the new main entrance of the care home to the new wing. A community space is on the ground floor of the new building, with a direct terrace connection. In front of the east facade, terraces run along the rooms on both the first and second floors, with direct garden access. The cantilevered terrace gives favourable shade in summer, and it also meets the operator's requirement that residents with limited mobility can be wheeled straight out of their rooms in a wheelchair for some fresh air.
