Town Hall Törökbálint 2015, design competition, 2nd prize
The community plays the leading role. As a defining element of the small-town centre, this contemporary building rooted in tradition gains its own identity through its clear composition, its transparency and its openness to its surroundings. The architectural expression reinforces the idea of a transparent, service-oriented Town Hall, and its message is clear and unambiguous to its users. Development and change are fundamental properties of life; change cannot be avoided or denied. This is what makes a work alive and real. In the building we have designed, tradition comes alive and speaks the language of our time. The architectural expression of the building is rooted in traditional architectural forms and the use of materials, and is realised with contemporary architectural means, strengthening the built heritage of Törökbálint. The building brought to life creates a clean built world that fully meets the needs of its function. The necessary, indispensable degree of abstraction and a formal language built from the essential elements of traditional architecture create an environment worthy of a town hall. The building can be operated economically. During the design we kept environmentally conscious and energy-saving design in mind. With the proposed siting and architectural expression, the building is able to enter into an active relationship with its surroundings and its users. We attribute great importance to the community-creating public space, which comes about in a clear and natural way. The building is an inseparable, organic part of the agora (public square, ceremonial space) forming towards Munkácsy Mihály utca, of the courtyard and space to the north-west, and of the green, park-like grove. The ceremonial space connected to the street and the ground floor, the paved inner courtyard opening towards the park, and the community space connected to the park at the start of the pedestrian ramp can all serve as excellent venues for community events. The new development enters a clear and unambiguous context with its surroundings and brings it into play. The surroundings and their connections are an important shaping factor in the siting and massing of the Town Hall. It responds to its narrower and wider environment alike. It reflects on the development of Munkácsy Mihály utca, the mass of the Cultural Centre, the position of the Ignác Zimándy Primary School and its gym, Kálvária Hill, the terrain conditions, the level difference within the plot, and the newly planned roads, pedestrian links and green areas. The “cloister” embraces the ceremonial space in front of the Town Hall in an abstract way, recalling the ancient agora. The “tower” of the building mass reaching out towards Munkácsy Mihály utca signals discreetly towards the street. The site layout allows the building to be set into the terrain, which we achieve by exploiting the slope of the plot. Making use of the level difference, the building has two storeys towards the street and three towards the park.
