Pitypang Kindergarten
Budapest, District VIII, Százados út 12-14.
design competition, 1st prize, 2015-2017
The basis of our architectural concept is to create a distinctive, child-centred building of high architectural quality. Rooted in traditional architecture and brought to life with contemporary architectural means, the building creates a clean built world that fully meets the needs of its function, and it reflects the educational programme of the Pitypang Kindergarten, which is built on cherishing traditions. A suitable degree of abstraction and a traditional formal language create an environment that is not too direct, yet is easy for children to accept, love and be inspired by. The building can be operated economically. During the design we kept environmentally conscious and energy-saving design in mind. Through its design, the building is able to enter into an active relationship with its surroundings and its users. The kindergarten opens towards the planned playground garden to the south, and the group rooms face this way. Orientation played a decisive role in the functional layout of the new kindergarten. We oriented all six group rooms to the south and provided natural shading with a deeply projecting canopy. The shading protects from direct summer sun, while in winter it lets in the low-angle sunlight. The kindergarten is arranged on two levels, with three group rooms on the ground floor and three above them on the upper floor. In front of every group room we create a spacious covered terrace facing the playground garden. The playground garden is easily reached from both the ground floor and the upper floor. As kindergarten practice is for children to wear outdoor shoes in the garden rather than the indoor shoes used in the group room, it is practical to reach the garden from the cloakroom (and not from the group room). From the upper floor, a wide, comfortable staircase leads down to the garden.
