Market Hall Pécs 2015, design competition, special honourable mention
A market is much more than a place for exchanging goods or shopping: it has an important community-building role and is a setting for community life. Today the market and going to the market are experiencing a renaissance, and going to the market is increasingly a feeling, a way of life. Sustainability, environmental awareness, an inclusive society, community thinking and a desire for quality food are all part of it. The traditions of the market are being revived to meet the requirements of today. The spreading appetite for good gastronomic culture is creating more and more good-quality eateries, and the demand for quality gastronomy keeps growing. In the concept of the planned market hall, we give an important role to the gastronomic function that complements the market, which appears as an organic, inseparable part of the hall. The market's role as a living community space also appears in the architectural concept and the architecture of the planned hall. The market hall is where urban and rural life meet. This meeting of the two, the community living space and the urban and rural worlds, gives the planned market hall its identity. An important element of the market hall is the market square, an open community space in front of the hall, which we designed as its forecourt. Part of the hall's catering venues open onto it, wrapping around the market square, along with the street-food stalls and restaurants that line and open onto the square. The market hall opens towards the community space. The market square is an extension of the hall's trading floor. The functional layout of the market hall is clear and legible. The meeting of the urban and rural worlds, the city and the regional farmland, appears in both intellectual and physical terms, and its symbolic presence is also expressed in the architecture. The mass and interior of the building evoke the hall-like character of the traditional market hall and subtly refer to traditional agricultural buildings, rooted in their architectural traditions, but in its form it does so abstractly, in a contemporary architectural language and in an urban way. The high-roofed mass gradually breaks open, rising and opening up organically. The rising roof geometry counterbalances the longitudinal axis, and the emphasis shifts towards the market square.
